Liposuction is surgery which aims to re-shape and contour the body by removing and reshaping areas of excess and stubborn fat.
Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic plastic surgery procedures performed. Almost any area where fat has accumulated can be treated, with the most popular areas for women being the abdomen, buttocks, inner and outer thighs. In men the most popular areas include the abdomen, ‘love handles’ and the breast area.
It is important to understand that liposuction is not tool to aid weight loss and is in no way a substitute for a healthy diet and regular exercise. Liposuction provides the best results in those who are near to their ideal weight, but have stubborn areas of fat that remain. It is used predominantly to improve the contours of the body. The most important factor in order to achieve an effective result with liposuction is already having good quality, toned skin. This process directly targets problem areas by reducing the number of fat cells in a specific area. These fat cells are permanently removed. The incisions made are minute and typically easily concealed.
Liposuction is usually performed as a day surgery, but can also be combined with other surgeries such as a Tummy Tuck or excess skin removal during post weight loss surgery. If this is the case, a patient may be required to stay in hospital overnight.
What happens in my liposuction consultation?
During your preoperative consultation, our fully trained clinical staff will take a look at the areas which are a concern to you, assess your skin elasticity and your fatty tissue to determine if you are a suitable candidate for liposuction. The clinician will take pictures of the ‘problem’ area(s) to plan your surgery and view your results after liposuction. At your liposuction consultation, the surgeon will provide you with an in-depth explanation of how your treatment will be executed, including allowing you to view before and after pictures of our previous liposuction patients. This will give you an indication of the results you can expect to achieve.
How is liposuction performed?
We believe that your safety is of paramount importance, and all significant liposuction procedures should be conducted in an accredited day surgery or hospital.
For small areas, liposuction can be performed under local anaesthesia, however larger or multiple areas to be treated will typically require general anaesthetic. It is commonly performed as day surgery and the patient is able to return home on the very same day. The length of the operation is dependent on the areas to be treated, whether the patient needs to be moved during surgery to access the sides or back in addition to how much excess fat is being removed.
Scars will be minimal, as the liposuction procedure is carried out by making a number of small skin incisions, a few millimetres in size, placing a cannula attached to the suction equipment to remove the fat. This is performed using a number of technologies for the best results, including power-assisted and ultrasonic (VASER) modalities. There are alternative treatments available on the market also, which include ‘fat-freezing’ which your cosmetic plastic surgeon can discuss with you to establish whether you are suitable candidate.
Liposuction is the most popular cosmetic surgery treatment in the world. Modern liposuction or ‘lip sculpture’ technology has evolved in such a way that it is safer and less invasive than it has ever been. Risks and complications from liposuction are slim to none, but you will be advised of these by your surgeon who will take into account your medical history, any current medical issues and what precautions to take during the recovery period.
The treatment areas will be wrapped in a compression garment that is to be worn for six weeks to reduce bruising and swelling as well as to help smooth out the skin. We will prescribe medication that can be taken orally to help with pain and swelling. Also, he will provide you with specific instructions on how to properly care for the surgical site and drains.
Scarring will depend on the location of the surgical site and the patient’s skin tone and healing process. Scars will be in inconspicuous locations and fade over time with proper care. Dr will recommend the best treatment to help you lower the visibility of scarring.
The cost of surgery depends on anaesthesia fees, surgical fees, and other hospital-related costs in addition to the extent of the procedure.
Pain and discomfort may last a few days. Swelling and bruising will last a few weeks. Oral medications can be used to alleviate any pain or discomfort.
